CURRENTLY IN MUSIC
Southern Ontario MB trio makes recording debut

Carol Riediger

Sounds of Freedom
An independent release. Recorded at Gospel Artist Recordings, London, Ont., 2001.

Sounds of Freedom is a women’s trio made up of Lyn Doerksen, Julie Wall and Lori Wall, and keyboardist Larry Wiebe. All are members of Port Rowan (Ont.) Mennonite Brethren Church, in their mid-30s, and actively involved in church ministry in southern Ontario, with a goal of encouraging the body of Christ. Their venues also include conferences and retreats.

This is their debut album, released in November 2001.

Their style is quite eclectic ranging from contemporary Christian to new southern gospel. The variety is refreshing and the album consists of gorgeous a cappella harmonies, a funky hymn arrangement of “Holy, Holy, Holy”, some more traditional sounds and several contemporary, upbeat selections with full band accompaniment.

Because they have been together as a group for four years, they boast a tight vocal blend. When they travel, they always have Larry play keyboards, but depending on the location, may sometimes have guitars with them, but often supplement with a soundtrack, produced by a studio band.

Sounds of Freedom enjoy groups like Sierra, Point of Grace, and the Martins, and their sound shows similarities. “Lift Me Up” is an original composition by Lynda Doerksen, and the rest of the tracks, though not their own music, are their own arrangements. They are in the process of writing some of their own music.

I enjoyed this CD very much and was encouraged. In reading the group’s acknowledgements, and when speaking to Lori Wall, I felt their deep love for the Lord and a heart for ministry.

For booking information or for more information about the CD, contact Lori Wall, phone 519-875-4600. CDs are also available as some local Christian bookstores in southern Ontario.

Carol Riediger leads worship at Chilliwack (B.C.) Central MB Church.
