Previous | Next Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Church leaders see importance of recording history

Ethiopian church leaders from various regions held their annual convention at the Mekane Yesus (Lutheran Church) Seminary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The convention gave Alemu Checole, one of the Africa writers for the Global Mennonite History Project, the opportunity to talk to church leaders about the importance of being scribes for the kingdom of God.

The Global Mennonite History Project is an initiative of Mennonite World Conference, a fellowship of Mennonite and Brethren in Christ congregations around the world.

Checole had attended a workshop at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind. and had done research in historical libraries and archives in Lancaster, Pa. and Goshen, Ind. He also was able to connect with other Mennonites.

Some of the churches in Ethiopia are preparing to write the history of their local congregations. At a July seminar, church leaders from four church regions in western Ethiopia had their stories recorded on cassette tapes and their pictures taken. People in several churches are interested in starting archives and recording their history. Mennonite World Conference release
