Abe Warkentin, the founder and long-time editor of Die Mennonitische Post, is resigning for health reasons, effective Dec. 31. The Post, a German newspaper published by Mennonite Central Committee Canada, helps connect many Low German-speaking colony Mennonites scattered throughout Canada, the US, Mexico and South America. Warkentin founded the paper 25 years ago in his basement and has been its editor most of that time. Under his management, the newspaper increased its readership and increased its staff to the current six. The Post also has an active book ministry selling books (4000 titles) and gospel music from several satellite offices staffed by volunteers. Warkentin wrote the regular column Dies und Das (“This and That”) for the Post, often poking fun at himself, especially after trips he made to Mexico and South America.
