Larry Matthews, former editor of the Canadian Baptist magazine, has won the Leslie T. Tarr Award for 2001. The award recognizes a major career contribution to Christian writing in Canada. Faith Today magazine presents the award each year at its June writers conference, God Uses Ink. The award is named for Les Tarr (d. 1995), a former editor of Faith Today, who was the first recipient of the award in 1988. Past recipients of the Tarr Award include John Redekop, Maxine Hancock, Margaret Clarkson, Harold Jantz, Phyllis Mitchell, John White, Harold Fuller, Hugh Cook, Jim Taylor and Audrey Dorsch. Power of the Cross is a gospel television program produced by Slavic Mission MB Church in Seattle, Wash. Yury Chernyetsky, one of the pastors of the church, hosts the weekly program that is broadcast to millions of people in California, Oregon and St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1998, he and a team from the church visited Magadan in order to share the gospel. Chernyetsky found interest for a Christian TV program was strong and returned with a contract to begin broadcasting. The necessary equipment was bought and a TV studio was built. The Christian Leader
ProvOnline is a new computer-based distance education program offered by Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Man. The Internet site offers multimedia lectures that are not independent studies, but are semester-based. They are designed to allow interaction between students and with the instructor.
