Randy Thompson began serving as full-time student ministries pastor to junior and senior high at South Abbotsford MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. in August. Most recently, he was campus pastor at Mennonite Educational Institute in Abbotsford for a year. Previously, he was youth pastor at Mountainview Community Church in Clovis, Calif. for three years, was youth pastor at South Abbotsford MB Church for six years, was youth pastor with Youth Cadence International at an American military base in Germany for two years and worked with Athletes in Action in San Diego, Calif. for two years. He has a B.R.E. from Multnomah Bible College in Portland, Ore. and a master’s degree in pastoral ministries from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. His wife Paula is a high school teacher at W.J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford. They have two children, Mackenzie, 7, and Amanda, 4, and are expecting their third child in March.

Dennis Wiens began serving as pastor of Sunrise Community Church in Edmonton on Aug. 27. He previously was youth pastor at Highland Community Church in Abbotsford, B.C. for four-and-a-half years and has worked during the summers at Columbia Bible Camp (now Stillwood Camp) in Lindell Beach, B.C. He has a B.R.E. from Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford and an M.Div. from Regent College in Vancouver. He and his wife Chrisaline have a son, Calvin, 16 months. Dennis replaces Dave Follack, who had been serving as interim pastor since Apr. 1, 2000.

Don Schuiling began serving as associate pastor of small groups and family ministries at Highland MB Church in Calgary on Sept. 1. Previously, he was pastor of First Baptist Church in Armstrong, B.C. for eight-and-a-half years, was associate pastor at Richmond (B.C.) Baptist Church for four years and was executive director of Camp Qwanoes on Vancouver Island for four years. He has a B.R.E. from Grand Rapids (Mich.) Baptist College (now Cornerstone University) and an M.A. from Northwest Baptist Seminary in Tacoma, Wash. He and his wife Deborah have three children, Ben, 15, Laura, 15, and Chad, 11.



Hugh Froese has resigned as youth pastor at Newton (Man.) Community Fellowship Church after serving for four years, in order to pursue further studies in Fresno, Calif. Previously, he worked with Youth for Christ in Portage la Prairie, Man. for seven years. He has a bachelor’s degree from Concord College. He and his wife Yvette have three children, Sarah, 8, Samuel, 6, and Zachary, 3. Jeff Banman has accepted a call to lead youth ministries at Newton (Man.) Community Fellowship Church. Most recently, he was an instructional assistant in a school in Winnipeg. He is a graduate of Providence College in Otterburne, Man. His wife Nicole is an executive assistant with Youth for Christ in Portage la Prairie, Man.



Angel Fehr is serving as primary/preschool pastor at Willow Park Church in Kelowna, B.C. Previously, she and her husband Tim served with Teen Mission International in South Africa. She has an Early Childhood Education certificate from Northwest Baptist Theological College in Langley, B.C., and has attended Prairie Bible College.



Tim Thiessen is serving as pastor of senior youth ministries at Willow Park Church in Kelowna, B.C. He has a B.A. from Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C. and an M.A. from Briercrest Biblical Seminary in Caronport, Sask. He is married to Michelle.

Howard J. Loewen began serving as dean and professor of theology and ethics at the School of Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif. on July 1. He replaces David W. Augsburger, who served as interim dean. Augsburger has returned to his position as professor of pastoral care and counselling in the School of Theology. Previously, Loewen was provost and academic vice-president at Fresno (Calif.) Pacific University and academic dean at MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno. He has a B.A. from the University of Winnipeg, a B.Th. from MB Bible (now Concord) College and an M.Div. and a Ph.D. from Fuller.



Phil Zylla has accepted a call to become executive director of Associated Canadian Theological Schools in Langley, B.C., effective Oct. 1. This is a new, full-time position that replaces the part-time role of coordinator. The executive director will bear overall responsibility for the leadership and administration of ACTS, including external relations and organization of internal administration. Since 1984, Zylla has pastored four congregations, most recently Sunshine Ridge Baptist Church in Surrey, B.C. since 1996. He also has taught at George Fox Seminary, Regent College, St. Stephen’s College and North American Baptist College. He has a B.A. from North American Baptist College in Edmonton, an M.Div. from North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls, S.D., a Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary and a doctoral degree in theology from the University of South Africa. The Langley campus of Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary is one of five partners in the ACTS consortium.



Claude and Muriel Queval began serving as Mennonite Central Committee Canada regional representatives for Newfoundland/Labrador at the end of August. They replace Bill and Pam Stevenson, who are remaining with MCC and will be working with the Innu people of Sheshatshiu, Labrador. Most recently, the Quevals pastored Église Chrétienne de St-Laurent, an MB church in Montreal. They have also worked with a Brethren church in Sherbrooke, Que. and the Salvation Army. Muriel has worked as a volunteer with MCC Quebec, coordinating material resources and serving as a member of the Women’s Concerns committee. In summer 1999, they joined a two-week MCC Work and Learn team that helped rebuild homes in Honduras after Hurricane Mitch. Both Claude and Muriel have their roots in France. Muriel moved with her family to Quebec in 1967. Claude followed her two years later, and they married soon after. The Quevals have four children and five grandchildren. Their youngest son, Yanael, 12, has accompanied them to Labrador.

Forty-two workers participated in an orientation held at Mennonite Central Committee headquarters in Akron, Pa., July 10–20. Twenty-nine are beginning overseas assignments; 12 are beginning North American assignments; and one was a guest. Alfred Sawatzky of Winnipeg began a two-year assignment in May, working in maintenance for MCC Canada. Previously, he worked for Schroeder Construction of Niverville, Man. He and his wife Lydia have two children, Mark and Cynthia, and are members of North Kildonan MB Church in Winnipeg.

King Road MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. baptized and welcomed into its fellowship Daniel Penner (r) June 17. Pictured with him is pastor Leonard Klassen.

Gateway Christian Fellowship in St. Catharines, Ont. held its first baptismal service July 15. The church has been meeting at the Holiday Inn during the summer while waiting for renovations at the Lakeport/Eden High School to be completed. Hotel management allowed the congregation to use the hotel’s indoor pool for the baptism. Over 200 people attended the service.
