As the world reacts in horror to the terrifying attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., Mennonite Disaster Service is calling Christians and others to seek peaceful opportunities to respond.

MDS is now accepting financial aid for the Restoring Hope Fund that will support faith-based partner organizations offering disaster relief, pastoral care and counselling services.

We cannot simply sit and watch, said MDS executive coordinator Tom Smucker. Our people want to do something.

Further MDS action will be based upon the requests of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross and the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.

Smucker has been in close contact with all three organizations exploring ways MDS will assist in the recovery.

Blood supplies in the US and Canada are being depleted by this disaster. MDS encourages people to make an appointment to donate blood; in Canada, call 1-888-2-DONATE.

MDS is also calling on Christians to pray for victims and their families, response personnel and national leaders during this time. In particular, MDS is asking churches to reach out to those within their communities who might become the object of hasty, fearful and scapegoating anger, and if needed, to offer support and protection.

Donations in Canada may be sent to the MDS Restoring Hope Fund, 134 Plaza Dr., Winnipeg, Man. R3T 5K9; phone 866-261-1279. MDS release
