John Wiens began serving as interim pastor at Hyde Creek Community Church in Port Coquitlam, B.C. on June 1. Previously, he was associate pastor at Willingdon Church in Burnaby, B.C. for 11-and-a-half years, was a church planter at Parkland Community Church in Yorkton, Sask. for six years, pastored Nutana MB (now Forest Grove Community) Church in Saskatoon for three years, worked for Campus Crusade for nine-and-a-half years and pastored Lucky Lake (Sask.) MB Church for two years. He has a diploma from Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Sask., studied for two years at the University of Saskatchewan, has a masters diploma from the International School of Theology in San Bernardino, Calif. and is working towards an M.Div. from MB Biblical Seminary. He and his wife Evelyn have three grown children, Andrea, Kenton and Carmen.
Jane Peck has resigned as childrens pastor at Westwood MB Church in Prince George, B.C., effective June 30, after serving for a year-and-a-half. Previously, she was director of adult ministries at Glencairn MB Church in Kitchener, Ont. for three years and was Christian education director at Turning Point Girls Home in Ridgeway, Ont. for two years. She has a B.R.E. from Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener. She and her husband Don are planning to study at Canadian Theological Seminary in Regina. They have a daughter, Shannan, 3.
Sean Morton completed his ministry as pastor of worship and music ministries at Bakerview MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. in June, following a mutual decision by Morton and the church. He had served for one year. An appreciation for Morton was held at the church on Sunday, June 24. Previously, he served in worship ministry at Point Grey Community Church in Vancouver, Christian Life Assembly in Langley, B.C. and Calvary Temple in Kamloops, B.C., and was associate pastor at Comox (B.C.) Pentecostal Church. He has a B.Mus. from the University of British Columbia and a diploma in theology from Western Pentecostal Bible College in Abbotsford. He and his wife Tracey have a daughter, Mackenzie, 3. They are open to further ministry.
Henry H. and Erica Dick of Fresno, Calif. attended an anniversary service of Christian Fellowship Chapel near Orillia, Ont. on May 27. This congregation was the Dicks first pastorate. In 1951, the Ontario MB Conference Board of Home Missions assumed pastoral responsibilities for a small house church that had been meeting for seven years as Evangelical Fellowship of Hampshire Mills. It was renamed Christian Fellowship Chapel in 1952; a larger building was built in 1972, and the current building opened in October 2000. The current pastor couple is Roger and Rosanne Thiessen.
God Squad, a puppet ministry at Parliament Community Church in Regina, presented the musical You Are the Light of the World on Sunday, May 6, challenging the audience to be on fire for Jesus Christ. Aletha Joice, long-time director of the ministry, was present for the performance despite struggling with a recurrence of cancer. Behind the curtain, seven young people, Janelle Gagnon, Jared Wiens, Grant Sawatzky, Jon Schroeder, Ryan Friesen, Tim Friesen and Krista Bekker, operated the colourful puppets. Since its beginning in 1974, the puppet ministry has entertained people of all ages. Joices husband Glenn has been a stalwart supporter of Aletha and the ministry, building and setting up stage props and lighting, driving the van to the various sites in Regina and the surrounding area, and trouble shooting sound equipment. Son Bob has assisted occasionally. The puppets were made by daughter-in-law Shelly. After the performance, one of the puppeteers presented Aletha with a floral tribute, and the audience gave her a standing ovation.
In March, Carolyn Nance began serving as part-time coordinator of Mennonite Central Committees SOOP program (Service Opportunities for Older People). As coordinator, Nance connects Canadians interested in short-term service with assignments across North America. Previously, Nance worked part-time in an adult day program for senior citizens in Winnipeg for some years, was a SALT (a short-term MCC youth program) leader along with her husband Brad in Winnipeg 1990-92 and was a social worker for MCC at an inner-city organization in Lancaster, Pa. in the 1970s. People over age 50 can volunteer for short periods, ranging from a week to several months, with Ten Thousand Villages, inner-city projects, camps and educational and health institutions. Last year, over 120 people served with SOOP in dozens of locations. SOOP is co-sponsored by MCC Canada, Mennonite Association of Retired Persons and Mennonite Board of Missions.
Ryan Cardinal of Armstrong, B.C. left in May to begin an assignment with Gospel Missionary Union at the Malaga Media Center in Spain, which broadcasts the gospel via radio and television to Muslim peoples in North Africa. Previously, Ryan has worked in camping and church ministries. He is a member of Armstrong Bible Chapel.
Kristen Mathies of Kitchener, Ont. is working with Mennonite Voluntary Services in the Mennonite Central Committee United Nations office in New York City. She graduated May 25 with an M.A. in peace studies from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind., and has an M.A. in English literature. She is a member of Kitchener MB Church.
Astrida Hoeppner has been hired as bookkeeper/secretary at Family Life Network, a media ministry of the Manitoba MB Conference, in Winnipeg, effective June 1. She and her husband Grant returned to Winnipeg in May after serving five years at Voice of Life radio station in the Dominican Republic, a ministry of the Back to God Hour. Previously, Astrida worked for MB Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg. The Hoeppners are members of McIvor Ave. MB Church, Winnipeg.
David McLauren has resigned, effective the end of August, after serving for over six years as the founding pastor of Indo-Canadian Community Church in Delta, B.C. He has a B.A. in public administration and an M.A. in cultural literature from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India, and an M.A. in missiology from Canadian Theological Seminary in Regina. He has also taught part-time at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C. He and his wife Sharmila have twin daughters, Samantha and Michelle, 2. They are open to further ministry.
