High Adventure Global Broadcasting Network (HAGBN) has been broadcasting Christian programming all around the world from its facilities in Jerusalem since July 2000. HAGBN is the first Christian broadcaster to work from a base in that city. Previously, HAGBN was based in southern Lebanon, but was forced to evacuate when the Israeli army pulled out of the territory in May 2000.

The Daniel Strategy is a new video series produced by Trinity Western University to help equip Christians engage their culture meaningfully for Christ. Inspired by the Old Testament example of Daniel, a godly man who understood his culture, the series includes interviews of Canadians on their views and beliefs.

Actress-singer Dale Evans, known for her work with husband Roy Rogers in western films, died Feb. 7. She was 88. Evans, who co-wrote the couple’s theme song “Happy Trails”, was a Christian who also wrote gospel songs, including “The Bible Tells Me So” in 1955. Roy died in 1998 at age 86. Evans appeared in 35 movies, recorded over 400 songs and wrote 20 books, including the 1953 classic Angel Unaware.

Herald Press of Scottdale, Pa. has won Angel awards for two books, The Hammer Rings Hope by Lowell Detweiler and Getting Home Before Dark by Peter J. Dyck. Each year, Excellence in Media of Hollywood, Calif., honours the best in “moral and social” impact in every aspect of the media with silver statuettes of angels. The Hammer Rings Hope is a coffee-table book celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mennonite Disaster Service. Getting Home Before Dark are meditations and stories on Christian service by long-time Mennonite Central Committee leader Peter J. Dyck.

The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce W. Wilkinson has over 5,468,000 copies in print, and is expected to become the bestselling hardcover adult book this year. In the first three-and-a-half months of 2001, it sold more than 3,638,000 copies.

Janette Oke, a Christian author of several series of “prairie romance” novels and children’s books, has sold nearly 20 million copies of her 57 books worldwide. Her first book, Love Comes Softly, was an experiment in the Christian publishing marketplace when it came out in 1979, but it reached the one million mark in 1996 and has been translated into 14 languages. An Alberta native who is moving from Calgary to Olds this spring, Oke sees herself first as a wife, mother and now grandmother  despite her success.

Christian music groups were among the winners of the 43rd annual Grammy Awards held Feb. 21 in Los Angeles, Calif. Petra’s Double Take won best Rock Gospel Album, and Jars of Clay’s If I Left the Zoo won best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. Other winners were Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder for their album Soldier of the Cross (Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album); Shirley Caesar’s You Can Make It Happen (Traditional Soul Gospel Album); Mary Mary’s Thankful (Contemporary Soul Gospel Album); and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, under the direction of Carol Cymbala, for the album, Live  God Is Working (Gospel Choir or Chorus Album).

In China, the Bible is a national bestseller, with 25 million copies having been sold in the last 13 years. The main source of the sales has been churches.

Holy Land Park, a theme park in Orlando, Fla., drew 800 patrons by noon at its Feb. 5 opening. Jewish organizations had announced plans to demonstrate against the $16-million US theme park because it is backed by Zion’s Hope, a ministry dedicated to sharing the gospel with Jewish people. But the demonstration never materialized. The 15-acre theme park features a replica of ancient Jerusalem, Herod’s Temple, Christ’s garden tomb, a typical street from ancient Israel and the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Over 100 people in biblical attire are part of the facility.

Mennonite Brethren Herald received two awards for its work in 2000 at this year’s Canadian Church Press Awards banquet held in Winnipeg on May 4. The magazine took first place for the front cover of its Jan. 7, 2000 issue “The Church: The local body of Christ”, designed by Fred Koop. “The Story of the Great King” by Gordon Nickel (Dec. 1) earned an honourable mention in the Narrative: Fiction/Non-Fiction category.
