Stories of grace

Susan Brandt

Inside I’m Dancing: Personal Stories of God’s Healing and Design
Edna Alison Froese, ed. Mennonite Central Committee Saskatchewan, 2000. 210 pp.

The stories contained in this spiral-bound volume are about people with chronic physical illnesses, mental illnesses, people who have been accident victims and about mentally handicapped people. All have stories of grace to tell.

Even though some of the subjects have died since the original story was written, a sense of hope still pervades. Grieving is a natural reaction to having a family member not being able to participate in all aspects of life the way one thinks is normal. In many instances, medical help was no help at all, but the friendship of neighbours and the church family have seen people through the bad times. Perhaps the key focus of the book is the fact that the subjects don’t necessarily see themselves as having a disability, but what they’re experiencing is “a part of life”.

It’s a book well worth the read, if only to make us aware of how best to interact with people who are seen as having to deal with situations many of us do not need to contend with.

Susan Brandt is managing editor of the MB Herald.
