Letters Letters to the editor

Mennonite Brethren Herald welcomes your letters on issues relevant to the Mennonite Brethren Church, especially in response to material published in the Herald. Please keep your letters courteous, brief and about one subject only. We will edit letters for length and clarity. We will not publish letters sent anonymously, although we may withhold names from publication at the request of the letter writer and at our discretion. Publication is also subject to space limitations. Because the Letters column is a free forum for discussion, it should be understood that letters represent the position of the letter writer, not necessarily the position of the Herald or the Mennonite Brethren Church. Send letters to:

or by e-mail to mbherald@mbconf.ca. (Please ensure that your postal address is included in your e-mail correspondence.)

Unity in the body

Re John Froese’s letter (Feb 16). I have attended a Covenant church, a Baptist church and an Evangelical Free church, and currently attend a Mennonite Brethren church. I’ve also worked at a multi-denominational Bible camp and attended a nondenominational Bible school. Seeing people of various denominations work and learn together has always been a blessing to me. In a time when the church is being pressured more and more by the world to accept its values, unity in the body of Christ is all the more needed. While various churches differ in how they worship, they are all united in that we all worship the same living God. There may be differences in doctrine, but we all rely solely on Christ’s death and resurrection for our salvation. Passages of Scripture may be interpreted in many ways, but the love of God still shines through all of His people. We all strive to be more like Christ, and as we do so, the world sees Him in us. “Let there be real harmony so there won’t be divisions in the church. I plead with you to be of one mind, united in thought and purpose” (1 Corinthians 1:10).

Altona, Man.

Additional incidents

I enjoyed the article, “Anti-Christian prejudice” (Feb. 2) by John Redekop and would like to add a bit more information for his file. I, too, wrote to Ms. Copps in February 1998 about the omission of Christmas and Easter from the 1998 Heritage Canada calendar. Beatrice Raffoul, Director of Operations for Heritage Canada responded that Ms. Copps appreciated my advising her of my concerns and assured me that the dates for Easter and Christmas would be included in any future printings of this calendar. These folks titled their 1998 calendar “Strengthening and Celebrating Canada”. Was this an oversight or deliberate?

Kudos for MBH

I appreciate the articles in the Herald. You cover important issues in a fresh way. A magazine written for a guaranteed constituency could be boring and, worst of all trite, but the Herald is neither.

Best one

The Feb. 2 issue, “Passionate Spirituality”, was the best one yet! Interestingly, our pastor used the same title for his sermon the day after I finished reading the Herald!

Several monthly publications cross our threshold, but yours is the one we look forward to most. Thanks for doing such a great job!
