Matthew 14:13-23

Stress and burn-out are key words today, and we are looking for solutions. Where in our day is there time to meditate, time to do the craft item that is continually being postponed? Will I ever have time? Will these days ever change?

For me, those busy days and years of child-rearing, those days of going to work, are gone not without some regret and some bitter-sweet memories. Retrospect can teach us many things. Meditating on the past brings quick answers that work like bandaids, to meet our immediate needs. But is there a solution that will apply to all situations, in all times? The answer can be found by searching the Scriptures.

Jesus heard that His friend John was dead. He had planned to go to a deserted place by Himself, but as Jesus saw the multitudes that had come, He had compassion on them. Can you identify with Jesus? Just when you have set time aside for yourself, someone is asking for your help. Jesus stayed to meet the needs of the crowd. He healed the sick, organized a potluck supper for His audience of 5000 and then sent them back to the city. Then, He went up on a mountain by Himself.

Even Jesus had to take time for Himself. So much more must we find the time for renewal. Gods law, in Leviticus 19:18 states: Love your neighbour as yourself. Galatians 5:14 says that the whole Law is fulfilled in this statement. Therefore, be as kind to yourself as you are to your neighbour. Could this be the solution?
Reflections is a column of brief reflections on Scripture passages. This one is by June Schmidt of Chilliwack, B.C. Freelance submissions for Reflections (200-250 words in length) are welcome.
