Art Reimer resigned as pastor of River West Christian Church in Edmonton, effective Oct. 20, after serving for eight-and-a-half years. Previously, he was youth pastor at Highland MB Church in Calgary for three-and-a-half years. He and his wife Anna-Lisa are both graduates of Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Sask.
Lanigan (Sask.) Christian Fellowship Church held an installation service for pastor couple Stephen and Trish White on Dec. 10. Ray Landis, conference minister of the Northwest Mennonite Conference, based his message, The Awesome Task of Pastoring, on 1 Timothy 4. He challenged the congregation to encourage their pastor by being sensitive to his difficult schedule, volunteering to serve, avoiding criticism of him, praying for him, promoting unity and remembering that a pastor is a human being called to a superhuman task. Church moderator Wayne Schmidt presented a basket of encouragement cards to the Whites and welcomed them into the churchs membership. Ralph Gliege, Saskatchewan Mennonite Brethren Conference minister, welcomed them to the MB Conference. Pastoral care board members Lance and Darlene Gunther prayed for the Whites and their new ministry. Steve thanked the church for its support, pledged to serve faithfully, read Colossians 1:24-29 and closed the service with prayer. The Whites began pastoring Lanigan Christian Fellowship Church on Dec. 1. Previously, Stephen pastored Sharon Mennonite Church in Guernsey, Sask. for five years and Moose Jaw (Sask.) Church of God (Pentecostal) for two years and was a youth pastor and pastoral intern at Humberlea Church of God (Pentecostal) in Toronto for two years. He has a B.A. in theology from Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Sask. The Whites have three children, Joshua, 11, Stefani, 10, and Joel, 7.
Hays (Alta.) Gospel Chapel held a commissioning service for Rod and Melinda Taylor on Oct. 29, welcoming them and their daughters Jennifer and Amanda. Rod was called from a career as a nursing assistant to prepare for ministry, then studied at Alberta Bible College and Prairie Bible Institute. Gerhard Reimer, chair of the Alberta MB Conference Board of Faith and Life, spoke from Pauls letters to Timothy, likening pastoring to painting. The pastor and the congregation were challenged to work together in making Gods house a blessing to others. Alberta MB Conference minister Abe Konrad officiated at the commissioning service. Following the service, the congregation celebrated Gods faithfulness with a potluck lunch with the Taylors.
Ron Braun began serving a three-year term as pastor of Yarrow (B.C.) Mennonite Church on February 3, after serving on an interim basis since September 1. Previously, he worked for MCC Supportive Care Services for two years, pastored West Clearbrook MB Church for three months, worked with Kingdom Ventures International for three months, pastored Yarrow MB Church for eight years, was associate pastor at North Kildonan MB Church in Winnipeg for seven years and was follow-up coordinator for Camp Arnes in Manitoba for 10 years. He is a graduate of Winkler (Man.) Bible Institute and has a B.R.E. from Winnipeg Bible (now Providence) College in Otterburne, Man. and an M.A. from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. He and his wife Marion have two grown daughters, Heather and Heidi.
Scott and LeeAnn Kopp were installed as youth pastor couple at Herbert (Sask.) MB Church on Oct. 15. Previously, Scott was a carpenter in Vancouver and LeeAnn did office work. They both served as counsellors this past summer at West Bank Bible Camp in Swift Current, Sask. He also served for one summer at Redberry Bible Camp near Waldheim, Sask., and did volunteer service at Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver, at First Baptist Church in Vancouver and with a prison ministry in B.C.s Lower Mainland. He is a graduate of British Columbia Institute of Technology in Burnaby, B.C., and studied one year at Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Sask.
Abe Bergen has been appointed president of Steinbach (Man.) Bible College, effective Apr. 1, 2001. He succeeds Stan Plett, who resigned last year due to illness. Bergen has 11 years of pastoral experience, including four years as senior pastor, at the Kleefeld (Man.) Evangelical Mennonite Church. He also was chair of SBCs Board of Directors for five years. He has an M.Div. from Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Man. Steinbach Bible College is jointly operated by three denominations: Chortitzer Mennonite Conference, Evangelical Mennonite Conference and Evangelical Mennonite Mission Conference.
Twenty-five people participated in an orientation at Mennonite Central Committee headquarters in Akron, Pa. Nov. 7-17. One is continuing an overseas assignment, and 24 are beginning assignments in North America. In September, Paul and Angela Neufeld of Vancouver, B.C. began a two-year assignment as youth service coordinators in Vancouver. Previously, Paul served with MCC in Haiti for six months. He also was a house manager for Occupational Rehab Group of Canada in Winnipeg. He has a bachelors degree in international development studies from the University of Winnipeg. Angela is studying music therapy at Capilano College in Vancouver. They attend Grandview Calvary Baptist Church in Vancouver. Angela is a member of Highland Community Church in Abbotsford, B.C. Paul is a member of Crossroads MB Church in Winnipeg. Tennille Schulz of Chilliwack, B.C. is beginning a two-year assignment as a processing assistant at Ten Thousand Villages in Akron, Pa. Previously, she was an assistant manager for Petro Canada in Chilliwack. She is a member of Chilliwack Central MB Church.
