POEM
Sit by my Well

Mark Phillips

(“The well that Jacob had dug was still there, and Jesus sat down beside it because he was tired from traveling.” John 4:6a)

Did the sun sap the strength of God-its-Creator?
Did the road burn the feet of Lord Almighty?
Did the wind scratch the face of the All-Seeing?
Did the thirst dry the lips of the Word of God?

Would You sit by my well, Tired Traveler,
Would you drink from my offer, Sovereign?
Would You slake your thirst at this pinpoint
Indention in Your universe?
Would You sit by my well?

And sitting
Would You with tired eyes
Burning feet
Face afire
Lips peeling
Offer me more in Your weariness
Than I dream of giving You
In my devotion?

This poem was written by Mark Phillips, a poet from Minot, N.D.
