Short stuff

“In programs like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? or Survivor, we cannot help but note what they reveal about the viewers themselves. Many themes emerge; one has to do with greed. The appetite for goods, or the celebration of people who will do anything to gain fame or wealth, attracts the obsessive energies of millions. Covetousness and envy are two of the deadly sins and the most vivid elements of said television programs and their reception.”

Martin E. Marty, Sightings, Aug. 28, 2000
