Survival tips for Christian communities

  1. Deal with conflict as it comes up.

  2. Hold each other accountable.

  3. Maintain open communication.

  4. Set expectations and be flexible.

  5. Remember that people are the most important thing about a community.

  6. Be willing to change.

  7. Be willing to be challenged.

  8. Develop some household guidelines for cleanliness.

  9. Set up time to vent frustrations and annoyances.

  10. Be sensitive to varying requirements of personal space.

  11. Respect personal differences.

  12. Have friendships outside the household.

  13. Have parties now and then.

  14. Do a project together.
These “survival tips” were written by a Christian community and later published in the Sept. 2, 1996 issue of Mennonite Reporter and are reprinted here by permission. While written for a Christian community, they could also be profitably used to guide congregations.
