Surrey, B.C.
EFC unveils short-term mission code

After more than a year of building consensus among mission leaders, the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada has developed The Code of Best Practice in Short-Term Mission.

Designed by EFC’s Task Force for Global Mission, the Code outlines objectives for short-term mission programs and presents general principles and standards of excellence for publicity, field management, pastoral care and re-entry support.

It is hoped that agencies and church bodies involved in short-term missions will consider adopting the Code, but it is not intended to establish legal standards or liability.

The Code will be officially launched Sept. 22 at the Short Term Mission Forum 2000, a training and equipping conference at the Intercultural Ministries Centre at Tyndale College and Seminary in Toronto.

The underlying values of the Code are:

  • a commitment to culturally appropriate expressions of lifestyle and ministry activities

  • a commitment to all stakeholders in short-term missions, such as participants, sending local church, mission agency and host church and/or ministry

  • a commitment to partnership and cooperation, and

  • a commitment, wherever possible, to communicate between the stakeholders as early and as fully as possible.
“The Code is meant to establish flexible but universal principles for achieving excellence,” said Gary Walsh, EFC president. “The Code is not meant to be a document for “policing” mission efforts. It is intended to encourage agencies and churches to actively develop their mission programs and to help in the process of preparing mission teams.”

To view the full text of the Code, visit www.globalmission.org. To find out how to adopt the Code or to enrol for the conference, write to: Geoff Tunnicliffe, Chair, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, Task Force for Global Mission, 13488-63 Avenue, Surrey, B.C. V3X 1J9.
