Winnipeg, Man.
Concord launches second SOD site

Concord College is launching a second School of Discipleship site for the academic year 2000-01. The Board of Directors of Concord College approved the plan at its Jan. 15 meeting.

The School of Discipleship launched its first semester in fall of 1998 with 23 students. Attendance jumped to 40 a year later. Next year, the school will operate in two locations with a combined total of a maximum of 72 students.

Concord College is owned by the Manitoba MB Conference. Students attending the School of Discipleship represent 15 denominations. Two semesters each academic year run from the beginning of September to the end of April.

The mission of the School of Discipleship is to provide students with an “outtatown” experience to promote growth in social maturity and inner strength away from home and to give an opportunity to serve in another country.

In order to make the experience as meaningful as possible, attendance will be limited to 36 students in each location. A team of five leaders will accompany the students in each location. Students in the program can earn university credit.

Students begin the year with a month of intense study and work projects in an outdoor camp setting, then move to the Canadian Rockies. Using a Capernwray school approach, Bible studies, life preparation courses, mountain-oriented adventure and humanitarian service opportunities are offered in the first semester. Students are required to keep a journal and work with a mentor rather than studying in the traditional lecture/exam format. They are encouraged to explore their faith and character.

In the second semester, students spend three months in a Central American country, studying the language and culture, and spending time in service and work projects. Alumni of the School of Discipleship have described their experience as a life-changing year. This year, students are in Guatemala.

Enrolment for next year’s two locations is pass the halfway mark. Both sites will have similar programs in Canada and Guatemala. Information is available at www.outtatown.com, phone (204) 669-6583 or write SOD, 169 Riverton Ave., Winnipeg, Man. R2L 2E5.
