REFLECTIONS
Lifetime warranty

Michael Dick

Hebrews 1:1-14

When I consider purchasing a given item, I am concerned about the relationship between price and quality. I am partial to my hard-earned cash, but I am willing to pay a reasonable amount for something that should last longer. A warranty plays into the purchase equation as well. What is covered, and what is not? What restrictions apply? I admit that when I see the words “lifetime warranty”, I’m skeptical. I fear that what is meant is that the “warranty” is void once the “lifetime” is finished – in other words, if the product is broken, the warranty no longer applies.

In reality, things do not last forever, regardless of the warranty. The writer to the Hebrews even talks of the heavens and earth perishing.

God’s Word, however, testifies to Jesus’ eternal existence: “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever. . . . You remain the same, and Your years will never end” (Hebrews 1:8, 12). In a world of decay, Christ is the one solid rock. In the midst of the chaos of our lives, He is dependable, unchanging, the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Following Jesus adds an eternal dimension to living – a real lifetime warranty.

Reflections is a column of brief reflections on Scripture passages. This one, by Michael Dick, Director of Resource Ministries for the General MB Conference, was originally published in Rejoice!, the inter-Mennonite devotional guide. (To order, phone (800) 545-7322.) Freelance submissions (200-250 words in length) are welcome.
