MEDA assesses flooding in Mozambique

Ed Epp, director of Mennonite Economic Development Associates’ international programs, is heading to Mozambique in early March to assess the damage to clients and how MEDA might be of assistance.

Initial reports say that as many as 30 per cent of MEDA’s 300 clients in Maputo have been directly affected by flooding. According to MEDA country manager Fion de Vletter, all of them are indirectly affected by the disaster because flooding has cut off access to roads to South Africa, where most get their goods to run their businesses.

MEDA’s program in Mozambique is concentrated in the Xikelene market in Maputo, where many of its clients, who lead a hand-to-mouth existence, obtain credit from MEDA to buy inventory and make other improvements to their businesses. Two-thirds of MEDA’s clients in Mozambique are women; the average MEDA loan size is $350.
