The Drama of Easter
Rhonda Wray, ed. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Meriwether Publishing, 1999. 352 pp. $15.95 US.

The Drama of Easter is an anthology of royalty-free plays for all ages and a variety of audiences. Containing an assortment of choices for the creative director, it includes dramas for large groups, as well as monologues. The 20 choices range from traditional plays like It is Finished by LeRoy Koopman to more contemporary works like Parade Without a Permit by Ernest R. Stair. While most selections focus on adult actors for an adult audience, there are four selections designed specifically for children. The plays are divided into 10 categories including Lent and Holy Week, Palm Sunday and Sunrise Services. The variation of occasions ensures that drama troupes will find Easter plays to suit their needs with options to spare.

This anthology is an excellent resource for churches and parachurch organizations interested in presenting the Easter message through drama. When I told my colleagues that I was reading a collection of royalty-free Easter plays, they anxiously wanted to borrow the book. There is a shortage of well-written drama for Christian audiences that are economical and easy to perform. This anthology provides both. The scripts are insightful and well-written, and the editor chose a wide-range of styles to appeal to any audience.
Cathie Kearsley is Director of Human Resources at Tyndale College and Seminary. She and her husband attend New Covenant Christian Fellowship MB Church in Toronto.
