Alexander (Sandy) Young has accepted a call to become senior pastor of Port Rowan (Ont.) MB Church, effective Apr. 1. Previously, he pastored Baptist churches in Verdun, Que., Port Hope, Ont. and Wheatley, Ont. for over 24 years. He has a B.Th. from Tyndale Bible College and Seminary in Toronto and a B.A. from the University of Waterloo. He and his wife Muriel have a grown son.

Michael Hotson began serving as pastor of St. Ann’s (Ont.) Community Church on Sept. 3, 1999. Previously, he pastored Pine Ridge Community Church in Pickering, Ont. for six years and was associate pastor at Sheridan Hills Evangelical Missionary Church in Oakville, Ont. for four years. He has a B.Th. from Emmanuel College in Kitchener, Ont. He and his wife Lori, a nurse, have four children, Clarissa, 11, Jaimee, 10, Richard, 8, and Alana, 5.



Ray Wiens resigned as pastor at Sunrise Community Church in Edmonton on Jan. 14, after serving for 12 years. Previously, he was a church planter in Whistler, B.C. for seven years. Currently, he is serving on the Canadian MB Conference Board of Evangelism and is chair of the Mission Calgary task force. He has a diploma from Columbia Bible College, Abbotsford, B.C., a B.A. from the University of British Columbia, a Diploma in Christian Studies from Regent College, Vancouver, and an M.Div. from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. He and his wife Kathryn have four children, Eric, 20, Darrell, 19, Sharon, 16, and Philip, 13. They are open to further ministry.

John and Maryanne Nikkel began serving as pastor couple of Manitou (Man.) MB Church on Feb. 1. Previously, John pastored East Aldergrove MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. for six years, Grace Church of the Mennonite Brethren in Cranberry Portage, Man. for five-and-a-half years and Leamington (Ont.) MB Church for six years. He has a B.A. from the University of Winnipeg, a B.Ed. from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Christian Studies from Canadian Theological Seminary in Regina. The Nikkels have four sons and four grandchildren.



Ernie Bergen has resigned as pastor of Philadelphia MB Church in Watrous, Sask., effective June 30, after serving for over six years. Previously, he pastored Lakeview MB Church in Killarney, Man. for nine years and Neighbourhood Life Church in The Pas, Man. for seven years. He also worked with Mennonite Central Committee in Washington for one year. He has a diploma in biblical studies from Briercrest Bible College, Caronport, Sask., and a B.A. from Fresno (Calif.) Pacific College. He and his wife Irene have three children and two grandchildren. They are open to further ministry.

Dwayne Harms has accepted a call to be a full-time church planter in Saskatoon with West Portal Church and the Saskatchewan MB Conference, effective Apr. 1. For the past six years, he has pastored the Baptist church in Midale, Sask. He has also been involved in the leadership of the Baptist General Conference. Previously, he interned at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Saskatoon and worked for five years as a welder. He has a diploma from Nipawin (Sask.) Bible Institute and a B.A. in pastoral ministries from Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Sask. and has also studied at Briercrest Seminary. He and his wife Janet have two children, Ashlynn, 6, and Tyler, 3. Harms, who attended West Portal Church as a youth, will be mentored initially by West Portal senior pastor Dwayne Barkman as he begins planting a new MB church in the city.

Winkler (Man.) MB Church held a commissioning service for associate pastor couple Ted and Mary Goossen on Sept. 19. They began serving in the area of family ministries last summer. Previously, they were camp directors for 14 years at Simonhouse Bible Camp at Cranberry Portage, Man.



Allen Carden has resigned as president of Fresno (Calif.) Pacific University, effective July 31, in order to return to teaching. He joined FPU in July 1997. Previously, he was president of Spring Arbor (Mich.) College for six years, was vice-president at Spring Arbor and was associate provost, associate dean for undergraduate studies, registrar, associate professor of history and admissions counsellor at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. He has a bachelor’s degree from Biola University, a master’s degree from California State University, Fullerton, and a Ph.D. from the University of California. During his tenure as president, FPU has had a record enrollment, growing from 608 undergraduate students in 1997 to 792 in 1999, and constructed a five-storey, $5 million US building housing student residences, academic offices and classrooms. FPU is owned by the Pacific District MB Conference.

Murray Barkman is the new director of Open Circle, the prisoner visitation program of Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. Previously, he worked with Manitoba’s probation service in the 1970s, was unit leader of MCC’s SALT program in Winnipeg, was director of Mediation Services (which mediates disputes at the community and court referral levels) and was a volunteer visitor for Open Circle. Since 1983, he has worked in residential construction. He and his wife Margaret attend Aberdeen Evangelical Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. They have three grown children. Barkman replaces Dori Zerbe Cornelsen, who worked for over eight years with Open Circle, first as co-director and then as director. Open Circle began in 1973 to encourage person-to-person friendships between volunteer visitors and prison inmates. About 40 inmates in three Manitoba institutions currently receive Open Circle visitors.



On Oct. 3, Panorama Community Church in Surrey, B.C. baptized Barb Steel, Cheryl Labelle, Tamara Raison, Mark Raison, Gary Skett and Linda Skett.



Jeneva Kopp and Gloria Johnson were baptized Nov. 28 in Lakeview Bible Church in Lethbridge, Alta.
