John Thoutenhoofd was called as adult and family ministries pastor at Central Heights MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C., effective Feb. 1. Previously, he was Christian education and home groups pastor at Bethany Chapel in Calgary 1993-99, was athletic director and a teacher at Canadian Bible College in Regina 1991-93, and interned at First Alliance Church in Dallas, Tex. 1989-90. He has a B.Sc. in physical education from the University of Saskatchewan, and an M.A. in Christian education and an M.A. in biblical studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. He and his wife Heather have four children: twins Rochelle and Justin, 10, Sharece, 7, and Mikaela, 3.
Barb Hunter retired as half-time pastor of childrens ministries at Mountain Park Community Church in Abbotsford, B.C. on Dec. 31, after serving in that capacity for over five years. Previously, she was director of childrens ministries for four years and a church secretary for 10 years in Willingdon Church in Burnaby, B.C. She and her husband Ross have four grown children and 12 grandchildren. She will be devoting more time to travelling and caring for her aging parents.
Vic Peters is completing a three-year term as pastor of Valleycliffe Christian Fellowship in Squamish, B.C. at the end of March. Previously, he pastored Hillside Community Church in Aldergrove, B.C. for six years and was the church planter at Boundary Community Church in Midway, B.C. for two years. He has a B.R.E. from Briercrest Bible School, Caronport, Sask. He and his wife Mary are considering another church planting ministry. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Alf Redekop has been appointed interim director of the Mennonite Church Canada Heritage Centre in Winnipeg from Nov. 15, 1999 to June 30, 2000. He has been part-time archivist at the centre since August 1994. He has been given a leave of absence from the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies where he has also worked part-time since 1987. Previously, he taught high school for 18 years. He and his wife Kathy are members of Home Street Mennonite Church.
Steinbach (Man.) MB Church held a tribute Dec. 11 for Ruth Ewert, who has served for 25 years with Africa Inland Mission, first in Kenya and now at Yonge Street Mission in Toronto. The churchs Mission Sisters shared a brunch with her. An evening service featured words of tribute, a skit with a motorcycle, and her favourite food, pizza buns and Oreo cake. She was presented with a wall hanging of a tree from Ten Thousand Villages.
Christian Fellowship Church in Lanigan, Sask., held a pastor appreciation day for pastor couple Abe and Kathy Klassen Nov. 7. Moderator Wayne Schmidt opened the service. The entire Sunday school walked down the aisle, then sang and cheered. Sunday school superintendent Bill Regier read comments written on a scroll by the children on Why we appreciate Abe and Kathy. The scroll was then presented to them. The speaker was LaVerne Jantz who shared with the congregation the various ways to care for their pastor. Victor Kline, chair of the pastoral care board (left), presented the Klassens and their sons, Justin and Jason, a tray of appreciation cards and gifts. At the conclusion of the service, many people expressed appreciation to the Klassens for their godly example and caring ways.
