Isaac Dick

Isaac Dick of Abbotsford, B.C. passed away Sept. 26. He was born Dec. 25, 1908 to Isaac Peter and Maria Dueck in Terek, Russia. As a teen, he accepted Christ, was baptized and joined the MB church. When he was 15, his father died. In 1925 he, his mother and 4 sisters came to Didsbury, Alta. In 1926 he settled in Beaver Lodge, Alta., working at various jobs to support his family. Without any formal training, he taught Bible school in Coaldale and La Glace, Alta. He married Sarah Schmidt of La Glace Jan. 23, 1938. In 1940 they moved to Gem, Alta. to farm. In 1946 they moved to a dairy farm in East Chilliwack, B.C. They moved into Chilliwack in 1971 and to Clearbrook, B.C. in 1988. In 1998 they moved to Bevan Lodge. He worked hard to provide for his family, farming and working in the hop yards and the berry plant and supervising berry pickers. He was a handyman. He loved visiting others. History interested him. He had an incredible memory. The spiritual welfare of his family was very important to him. He is mourned by Sarah; children Peter, John, Mary, Irene, Martha, Louella, Ken and Sharon; 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The memorial service was Oct. 2 in Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, with John E. Klassen, Jay Neufeld and John Schmidt ministering.
Jakobine Schroeder

Jakobine Schroeder of Abbotsford, B.C. passed away Sept. 18. She was born Jan. 5, 1903 to Kornelius and Jakobine Kliewer in Wymyschle, Poland. Three days later, her mother died. She was cared for by her uncle and aunt, Heinrich and Pauline Unruh. She married Wilhelm Schroeder Nov. 23, 1923. They assumed responsibility for the Unruhs farm. Son David died as a soldier in 1943; son Peter died at birth in 1926. They had 10 more children. She emphasized the importance of Sunday school. They did not immigrate to Canada in 1929 so she could care for her foster mother. Wilhelm was interred by the Soviets in the early part of World War II. In 1943 they tried to flee the country, but were forced back by the army. Wilhelm was arrested in 1945, and put into forced labour, and all but their youngest 2 children were forced to work for other Polish farmers. Jakobine slaved all day as a washerwoman. In 1948, with the help of MCC, she and her children reached Germany. Wilhelm joined them in 1949. In 1951 they immigrated to Canada, farming in Acme, Alta. In 1953 they moved to a farm at Arnold, B.C. They attended Arnold MB Church. They committed their lives to the Lord. They were baptized Aug. 2, 1953. She entertained many in her home. She recovered from surgery for stomach cancer in 1966 and 1974, and survived tuberculosis in 1985. In 1967 they moved to Clearbrook, B.C., joining Clearbrook MB Church. She continued to cook, bake, can and garden, and entertain guests. In 1983 they moved to Menno Home. In June 1983 Wilhelm died. She loved outings and family visits. She always had a smile, chocolate bars, candies and cookies for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never complained. Several strokes impaired her memory, speech and mobility, but not her cheerful disposition. She found strength in Psalm 91:1-2. Predeceased by Wilhelm, 2 sons, 1 great-granddaughter and 9 siblings, she is mourned by children Henry, John, Martha, Annie, Bill, Emilie, Erna, Ella, Tilly and Bernie; 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Sept. 24 in Clearbrook MB Church, with John E. Klassen and Jay Neufeld ministering.
Susanna Epp

Susanna (Susie) Epp of Chilliwack, B.C. passed away Sept. 21. She was born July 1, 1913 to Jacob and Katherine Dueck in Orenburg, Russia. Hard times brought the family close to God, and at 10 she accepted Christ. She was later baptized in Coaldale, Alta. In 1926 the family immigrated to Canada. She went to school, but was needed at home so she completed grades 11 and 12 by correspondence. She attended Bible school in Coaldale, Hepburn, Sask. and Three Hills, Alta. She desired be a missionary teacher or nurse. In 1940 she travelled to South America to marry Bernard Epp, who was working with the Lengua Indians. She shared her knowledge of health care and helped start an orphanage. In 1946 they returned to Canada for health reasons, settling in Vauxhall, Alta., then Chilliwack. She continued her contribution to missions, sewing quilts for MCC, and working in the church. She was an avid gardener, sharing produce with family and neighbours. She is mourned by Bernard; children Harold and Erwin, both of Vancouver, Elmer of Kamloops, B.C., Dorothy of Austin, Tex., Victor of Chilliwack, Lillian Dueckman of Maple Ridge, B.C. and Rosalind Cleroux and Judith, both of White Rock, B.C.; 13 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 2 brothers and 4 sisters. The funeral was Sept. 27 in Broadway MB Church, Chilliwack, with Robert Friesen and Henry Warkentin ministering.
Jacob Janz

Jacob Janz of Coaldale, Alta. passed away suddenly Sept. 17. He was born Feb. 26, 1913 to Jacob B. and Agnes Janz in Fischau, Russia. In 1924 the family immigrated to New Hamburg, Ont. In 1927 they moved to Coaldale to farm. In 1942 he married Tina Dueck. Until 1981 they farmed near Coaldale and Lethbridge, Alta. In 1955 he lost his leg in a farm accident. He seldom complained about the disability. He was committed to serving God in his family, church and community. He was active in Coaldale MB Church throughout his life, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and working on various committees. He was a man of few, but well-thought-out words, earning much respect. He served on the local hospital board for 28 years. He is mourned by Tina; children Agnes Moore of St. Albert, Alta., Arnold of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Esther Berg of Coaldale, Marion Quiring of Calgary, Charlotte Quapp of Sherwood Park, Alta., Rick of High River, Alta. and Gwen Allison of Toronto; 14 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The memorial service was Sept. 22 in Coaldale MB Church, with Lorne Willms and Rudy Heidebrecht ministering.
Loretta Anne Janzen

Loretta Anne Janzen of Winnipeg passed away June 28 after a brief, intense illness. She was born Aug. 6, 1937 to Nic and Sarah Neufeld in Winkler, Man. The death of a brother in infancy had a deep impression on her. She graduated in 1955, and went to teachers college for a year. In 1956 she and her dad were baptized, joining Grossweide MB Church. She taught for 2 years near Winkler. She married Alan Janzen Aug. 7, 1958. They taught for 2 years in a 2-room school in Osterwick, Man. When Alan studied for a year, she taught music in Transcona, Man. While raising her family, she taught piano in Winkler and boarded cousins, brothers and others. She earned a B.A. and worked at the architecture and fine arts library at the University of Manitoba for many years. Music was a passion of hers. She loved singing in church choirs, ensembles and oratorio choirs. In 1998 she and Alan joined the tour that recorded Verdis Requiem in Prague in order to raise funds for landmine relief through MCC and World Vision. Her life was rich, finding expression in her devotion to her family and an intense dedication to any task she pursued. She was always giving of her time for letter writing, cooking favourite dishes and baking special cookies in unconditional love. She had a genuine laugh and a bright smile, was patient and encouraged her children. She placed others needs before her own. Her zest for living was infectious. During a life-threatening illness, she circled Psalm 32:7 in her Bible. She is mourned by Alan; son Mark of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter Rachel Meadows of Vancouver; 1 grandson; 1 sister and 1 brother. The funeral was July 3 in Westwood Community Church, Winnipeg, with Lorlie Barkman and Victor Neufeld ministering.
Theodore John Wall

Theodore John (Ted) Wall of Swift Current, Sask. passed away Oct. 14. He was born June 1, 1911 to John and Susie Wall near Centre Spring, Sask. In 1926 the family moved to Rhinefeld, Sask. He attended Herbert (Sask.) Bible School. After committing his life to the Lord, he was baptized at McMahon, Sask. In 1936 he married Helen Schulz. They farmed near McMahon. In 1953 they moved to Vauxhall, Alta., where he farmed and led the church choir. While driving tractor he waved his arms, preparing for choir rehearsals. They returned to Swift Current to farm in 1955. He was active in church all his life, and church attendance was important to him. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school, leading choir and contributing his carpentry skills for church building. He played several instruments, including playing faith songs on the Hawaiian guitar, and loved to sing. In his wood shop, he made piano benches, jewellery boxes, magazine racks, cupboards, a harp and a harpsichord. In 1964 he retired to Swift Current and began piano tuning and repair. In 1985 Helen died. He later moved to Prairie Pioneer Lodge. Predeceased by Helen and a great-grandson, he is mourned by children Doris Bornn of Abbotsford, B.C., John of Saskatoon, Ed of Swift Current, Jessie Wieler of Abbotsford and Marie Brooks of Swift Current; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 sister and 1 brother. The funeral was Oct. 18 in Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, with Cliff Janzen ministering.
Eleonore Mathilde Lichti

Eleonore Mathilde Lichti of Salmon Arm, B.C. passed away Sept. 23 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. She was born Aug. 5, 1955 to Horst and Berta Lichti in Murrayville, B.C. In November 1961 she accepted Christ. Her childhood was spent on Vancouver Island. She graduated from high school in Rocky Mountain House, Alta. She attended the Alliance church there. In January 1980 she was baptized in a small mission church. When she and her parents moved to Dawson Creek, B.C., she attended Northgate MB Church. She loved children, flowers and cats. She often sang along with cassettes while driving. She was a dependable and trustworthy worker. She is mourned by her parents and 2 sisters. The funeral was Sept. 29 in Armstrong (B.C.) Bible Chapel, with John Balzer ministering.
