Bookmarks on movies and faith

Gordon Matties

The Internet Movie Database

The best source for finding movie reviews on the Internet.

Charles Henderson’s Reviews

Reviews on this Web site spring from a “lively faith in which the passions of the heart are brought into harmony with the life of the mind. We prefer to praise films that speak to the point of intersection between the mind and the spirit.”

Journal of Religion and Film
(University of Nebraska)

An academic journal that offers a wide array of essays and papers on religion and the movies.

Hollywood Jesus

Webmaster David Bruce is a pastor who says: “I love to go to church and film festivals. For me they are both spiritual experiences. I believe that our search for God and life’s meaning is reflected in Hollywood films and in our culture. Our reviews are visual and look beyond the surface to the deeper emotional, spiritual, and biblical connections.”

Christian Spotlight on the Movies and TV

Offers movie reviews from a conservative evangelical perspective. Also, provides a “rating” for each film (i.e. a “1” is very offensive, while a “5” describes a movie containing nothing offensive).

The Dove Foundation

Dedicated to encouraging the creation, production and distribution of wholesome family movies and videos. Identifies movies that have received the Dove seal of approval.

Ted Baehr’s MovieGuide

A sampling of reviews, along with articles that offer critique of the media. More and fuller reviews are available to subscribers. The site is dedicated to “redeeming the values of the media according to biblical principles.” Reviews movies according to potentially offensive elements, and, sometimes simplistically, identifies the movie’s “worldview” as: Christian, environmentalist, humanist or socialist, homosexual, false religion, New Age or Pagan, etc.

The Christian Critic

From the home page: “As Jesus Christ taught God’s truth by using images and events taken from the culture of his day, it is this reviewer’s intention to use the culture of our day and time for the same purpose. Even though Hollywood’s aim is not to include spiritual lessons in the films they produce, art does tend to imitate life. Since the Word of God is life, we should be able to find aspects of the Word of God in every film that we see. Why not train our minds to look for them”?

ChristianWeek

A great Canadian mainstream evangelical publication, with reviews by Peter Chattaway in every issue.

Peaceweb: Movies with a Conscience
(Canadian Quakers)

This site lists suggested “movies with a conscience” by category (i.e. “Antiwar,” “Biography,” “Environment,” “Religion,” etc.).

CBN Entertainment

The Christian Broadcasting Network was founded by Pat Robertson in 1960. Contains brief reviews by CBN’s Regent University faculty members, and some longer reviews from MovieGuide which are not available in full on that site unless you are a subscriber.
