POEM
I’ll want a time machine

Alyssa M. Kutz

I’ll want a time machine
A few years from today,
So I can go back in time to
This special day.

I’ll want a time machine,
And when I do, I’ll start to cry.
Some folks will wonder,
They’ll wonder why I have to cry.

I’ll tell them that
I’m remembering grade three,
And how wonderful my teacher was
To the whole class and me.

I’ll want to be in grade three again,
Once more I’ll want to be small,
But it’s the other way, you know –
By then, I’ll be tall.

I won’t ever visit grade three again,
Though I will keep in mind
Something that I’ll treasure,
Something that is kind.

I’ll want a time machine,
And I’ll come back to grade three,
And we’ll be together,
Forever in a dream.

This poem was written by 8-year-old Alyssa M. Kutz of Port Rowan, Ont. in June 1998 in appreciation for her teacher Jeanne Stewart. Her mother Cindy L. Kutz writes, “We tried to teach our children to have a positive attitude toward their teachers and pray for them.” She adds that the poem “shows how a teacher can affect a child’s life. Teachers need our support and prayer and encouragement because it is a difficult profession.”
