Ten Thousand Villages Canada sales up 40%; strategy working

MCC Canada release

Winnipeg, MB

Sales at Ten Thousand Villages Canada have grown 40% over last year, and the organization will show a small surplus on operations in 1998.

Sales out of the New Hamburg, Ont. warehouse reached approximately $3.76 million by the end of February, the fiscal year-end. That is 13% higher than TVV Canada budgeted for the year.

Two store launches in 1998 brought in new customers. “The stores in Victoria and Halifax performed very well. Both of them opened in October and had significantly higher sales than expected in the months leading up to Christmas,” said director Doug Dirks. “They’re both in established shopping centres with good traffic.” Dirks said that TTV Canada’s strategy is working and that TTV Canada is planning to introduce new stores in Toronto and Ottawa in the next year. Upgrades for some stores are expected as well.

Sales for the non-profit job creation program of Mennonite Central Committee have been growing in all regions. TTV Canada has stores across Canada, from Victoria to St. John’s, Nfld.

In 1998, regional TTV programs in the Maritimes, Alberta and B.C. were amalgamated into the Canadian program headquartered in New Hamburg, Ont. This amalgamation means that the stores report directly to TTV Canada rather than to their provincial MCC offices.
