Mary Baerg

Mary Baerg passed away Jan. 31. She was born Apr. 9, 1912 to Johan and Emilie Lepp in Terek, Russia. In 1925 the family immigrated to Manitoba. They lived with relatives in Gnadenthal, then moved to Osterwick, Manitou and Purves, Man. She accepted Christ; she was baptized in Winkler (Man.) MB Church in 1927. On Nov. 23,1932 in Osterwick, she married William J. Baerg, whom she had met through church. They moved to Snowflake, Man., Winnipeg, then North Kildonan, Man., where they made lasting friends. In 1946 they moved to Greendale, B.C. In 1984 they sold their auto body business and moved to Abbotsford, B.C. In July 1998 she moved to Menno Home. Predeceased by daughter Nellie Hunt, son John and 1 brother, she is mourned by William; children Mary Fast, Rita Thiessen and Bill; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 sister and 2 brothers. The memorial service was Feb. 4 in Men no Hospital Chapel, Abbotsford, with Henry Thiessen ministering.



Bertha Schroeder

Bertha Schroeder passed away Nov. 19. She was born Dec. 6, 1916 to Franz and Wilhelmine Kliewer in Deutsch Zytzke, Poland. At 17, she was baptized in Wymyschle MB Church. She married Peter Schroeder May 9, 1936. Peter was killed on Aug. 28, 1944 while serving as a medic in the German army. In 1945 Bert ha and 4 children fled to Germany. She worked as a farm labourer and became a skilled seamstress. In 1948 she brought her family to Canada. They stayed in Yarrow, B.C., then moved to Arnold, B.C. She bought a small farm and provided for her family, nurturing them in godly ways. In 1962 she moved to Vancouver, where she continued to sew for others, many of whom became close friends. She joined Willingdon MB Church, Burnaby, B.C. She moved to Burnaby in 1985, then to Tabor Home in Abbotsford, B.C. in 1997. She is remembered for her perseverance, courage, hard work and faith in God. She loved others and had a special love for children. She accepted all people with grace just as they were. The last years, she spoke often of heaven and how she longed to be with her Lord and to see Peter again. She suffered a severe stroke on Nov. 16. Predeceased by Peter, daughter Martha in infancy and 2 brothers, she is mourned by children Lydia Nickel, Walter, Paul, and Hedy Klassen; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters. The memorial service was Nov. 21 in Willingdon Church, with Bill Klassen and Peter Dueck ministering



Aganetha Thiessen

Aganetha (Agues) Thiessen passed away Jan. 3. She was born Mar. 21, 1907 to Wilhelm and Helena Fast in Klippenfeld, Molotschna, Ukraine. She was baptized in the Mennonite Church in Schoensee on Pentecost 1926. She married Johann Thiessen Mar. 12, 1931. In 1933 Johann was arrested and exiled. He returned in 1934. In 1941 Johann was conscripted by the army to dig trenches. He became a prisoner of war, returning home in October. In 1943 the family fled to Poland. Johann was drafted into the German army in 1944. In 1945 the family was evacuated and lost all contact with Johann. Agues was left to care for her mother and 4 children. In 1950 they immigrated to Canada with the help of relatives, Jacob Petker and family from Port Rowan, Ont. They moved to Kitchener, Ont., joining Kitchener MB Church. Agues worked at the Walper Hotel in Kitchener for 2 years and for Mutual Life in Waterloo, Ont. until retirement. In 1953 son Heinrich and Agnes's mother died. Her church was very important to her. She especially enjoyed quilting with the Tabeo Verein and later the Women's Missionary Service. She enjoyed Seniors' camp at Camp Crossroads, which she still attended last summer at age 91. Agnes was a prayer warrior and never missed an opportunity to talk about her Lord. Her family meant a lot to her, and she was thankful that she had learned enough English to be able to speak to and pray with her grandchildren. She is mourned by children Willy, Helen, and John; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Jan. 7 in Kitchener MB Church, with Allan Labun and John Wall ministering.



Samuel Goertzen

Samuel Goertzen passed away Feb. 7. He was stillborn to Randy and Lisa Goertzen in Carman (Man.) Memorial Hospital. Predeceased by grandfather Frank Rossi, he is mourned by parents Randy and Lisa of Homewood, Man.; grandparents Bill and Mary Goertzen and Mary Rossi; and uncles and aunts. The funeral was Feb. 11 in Elm Creek (Man.) MB Church, with John Willems ministering.



Anna Frischbutter

Anna Frischbutter passed away Jan. 17. She was born Dec. 29, 1914 to Wilhelm and Anna Loewen in Steinfeld, Ukraine. Her father was a deacon, and God was an important part of family life. When Anna was 12, her mother died of cancer. Her father remarried. Public worship services were forbidden. In 1934 Anna married Heinrich Frischbutter. They lived with his parents for 2 years, then bought their own house. In 1943 they fled to Germany. In 1944 Heinrich was conscripted into the army. In hardship, Anna always found refuge in Jesus, and by grace the family survived. She was baptized in Berlin in 1946. Her Scripture for conversion was Ps. 119, especially v. 105. In 1947 she and her children moved to Paraguay. With the help of Peter Dyck, Heinrich joined them after a 4-year separation. In 1958 the family moved to Winnipeg, joining North Kildonan MB Church. Anna was always willing to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed fellowship in the Frauendienst program at church till last year. She spent a number of years doing volunteer work at the MCC thrift store. She loved gardening, crocheting, travelling, family gatherings and hosting. Her family meant a lot to her. Predeceased by Heinrich in 1983, 7 siblings and an infant son, she is mourned by children Anna Janzen, Henry, Willy, Maria Didzun, Louise Rempel, John, Fred, and Betty; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Jan. 21 in Mclvor Ave. MB Church, Winnipeg, with Peter Friesen and Helmut Kasdorf ministering.



Frank F. Bargen

Frank F. Bargen passed away Dec. 31. He was born Nov. 9, 1917 in Ukraine. The family fled to Canada in 1929. They worked on the Charlie Clark farm in Carlyle, Sask. He loved to learn, but had limited opportunity to go to school. Escape from Russia, his mother's miraculous healing from cancer and the wonder of nature convinced him that there was a greater Being. He was baptized Aug. 10, 1941. In 1936 the family moved near Carman, Man. In 1947 he married Mary Janzen and took over the family farm. He set out to be a great farmer and took winter courses on poultry management, farm mechanics and welding at the University of Manitoba. He was a registered seed grower, a select seed grower and one of the first farmers in the area to grow rapeseed, Raja flax and seed peas. He was chair of Carman Memorial Hospital board, chair of Carman Co-op board, a charter member of Dufferin Credit Union and a member of Carman District Farm Business Association, Carman Chamber of Commerce, Carman Housing Authority and Carman Youth Justice Committee. He was active in the church and worked hard at building the new facility for Carman Gospel Light Church. He loved family holidays, camping and fishing, hosting the whole family on weekend trips to Grand Forks, N.D. and wintering in Texas, California and Arizona. He is remembered for his faith, hope, love, encouragement, support, honesty, hard work, love of play, gratitude and trust in God. He was ready to meet his Creator. He is mourned by Mary; children Linda Enns, Ruth Stege, Don, Elaine Falk and John; and 15 grandchildren. The memorial service was Jan. 4 in Carman Gospel Light Church, with Terry Carter ministering.



Jacob W. Neufeld

Jacob W. Neufeld passed away Feb. 18. He was born Mar. 16, 1913 to Abram and Anna Neufeld near Horndean, Man. His mother died when he was 3. Because he helped on the family farm, he was only able to complete grade 4. At 13, he accepted Christ through the influence of his siblings and the preaching of H.H. Voth. He married Mary Heide Apr. 17, 1932. They farmed in Rosenheim School District. Seven years later, he bought a farm in Grossweide School District. He was a member of Grossweide MB Church, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir for many years. In 1968 they moved to Plum Coulee, Man. He serviced a rural postal route for 10 years and drove school bus until retirement. He died suddenly in the midst of caring friends while having lunch with the people in his apartment block. Predeceased by Mary in 1997, daughter Eleanor in 1996 and 3 brothers and sisters he is mourned by children Leona Schroeder of Red Deer, Alta., Leonard of Abbotsford, B.C., Larry of Brandon, Man., Clarence of Winnipeg and Ronald of Brandon; 16 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Feb. 22 in Winkler (Man.) MB Church, with Neil Block and Arnie Neufeld ministering.
