Ali Emmanuel El-shariff Abdallah of Family Life Network in Winnipeg converses daily with Arabic-speaking people around the world. Ali Emmanuel, a Sudanese and former Muslim, works in the Arabic department of FLN, the Mennonite Brethren international radio/TV agency. Recently, he led an accountant in Ramallah to the Lord.



Jack Crompton began serving as half-time assistant pastor to young adults at Whistler (B.C.) Community Church at the beginning of January. He has a B.A. from Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. and is currently working toward a Master of Christian Studies degree from Regent College in Vancouver. He previously served a year-long, half-time internship at the church in 1999–2000. (A story on his ministry at that time appeared on the front page of the National Post May 1, 2000, and was reported in the Crosscurrents section of the MB Herald Oct. 6, 2000.) His wife Carolyn was formerly a Young Life staff member in Edmonton.

Ron van Akker has resigned as senior pastor of Murrayville Community Church in Langley, B.C., effective May 5, after serving for three-and-a-half years. On May 6, he will begin serving as administrative pastor and assistant to the senior pastor at Willingdon Church in Burnaby, B.C. Previously, he was associate pastor at Bakerview MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. for 10 years and was manager of a McDonald’s restaurant for 10 years. He has a B.A. from Trinity Western University and an M.A. from MB Biblical Seminary (ACTS) in Langley. He and his wife Sherrie have a daughter, Kristen, 16.



Ken Braun has resigned as associate pastor at North Peace MB Church in Fort St. John, B.C., effective June 7, after serving for nine-and-a-half years, beginning as youth pastor in 1993. He has a B.A. from Providence College in Otterburne, Man. and an M.A. from Providence Theological Seminary. He and his wife Joan have two children, Nolan, 6, and Aiden, 4, and are expecting their third child in August. The Brauns are open to further ministry.



Grant Wiebe has resigned as youth pastor at Armstrong (B.C.) Bible Chapel, effective at the end of June, after serving for almost four years. He studied at a community school and also studied at the Bible school at Capernwray Harbour on Thetis Island, B.C. He and his wife Melissa are expecting their first child in May. They will be moving to Kelowna, B.C., where Grant will be working as a realtor.



Lisa Jahnke is serving a pastoral internship, working mainly with senior high students, at Highland MB Church in Calgary. She is a student at Mount Royal College. Previously, she worked at the Black Forest Academy in Germany for two years and served with Operation Mobilization in Hungary for a summer. She has a diploma from Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Sask.

Scott Street MB Church in St. Catharines, Ont. held an installation service for senior pastor couple Patrick and Valerie Bartley on March 24. Mark Johnson, Ontario MB Conference minister, officiated at the installation service. The Bartleys, along with their two oldest children, were welcomed as members during the service. The Bartleys began serving as pastor couple of Scott St. MB Church on March 1. Previously, he pastored Rawdon St. Baptist Church in Brantford, Ont. for 14 years and was youth pastor at Shenstone Memorial Baptist Church in Brantford for four years.

Marlene Epp of Kitchener, Ont. has been appointed academic dean at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo, Ont., effective July 1, after serving as acting dean since January. She replaces Conrad Brunk, who has assumed the directorship of an endowed research program at the University of Victoria. Epp has been editor of the Conrad Grebel Review since 1998. She began a regular faculty appointment at the College in fall 2000 after serving as an adjunct faculty member for several years. She has a B.A. from the University of Manitoba, an M.A. from the University of Waterloo and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. She is the author of Women Without Men: Mennonite Refugees of the Second World War and Mennonites in Ontario: An Introduction. She is currently writing a book for the Mennonite Historical Society of Canada entitled A Historical Survey of Women, Gender, and Family in Canadian Mennonite Communities. Conrad Grebel University College is a Mennonite school, owned by Mennonite Church Eastern Canada and affiliated with the University of Waterloo.

Kennert Giesbrecht of Winnipeg, formerly of Loma Plata, Menno Kolonie, Paraguay, has been hired as editor and manager of Die Mennonitische Post. Giesbrecht replaces Abe Warkentin, who served as the paper’s editor for most of its 25-year history and resigned in January. Giesbrecht has nearly 10 years of writing and editing experience. Previously, he has volunteered as both contributor to and editor of Menno Informiert and Menno Aktuell in Paraguay; was a teacher and principal in Paraguay for 12 years; and taught junior high school in Germany for a year. He speaks Low German, High German, Spanish and English. Die Mennonitische Post is a Low German newspaper published by Mennonite Central Committee Canada.



Adam Robinson has been appointed interim Mennonite chaplain on the campus of the University of Manitoba. Robinson is completing an M.Div. at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind. Previously, he was a youth pastor for five years. The Mennonite chaplain is appointed by the Inter-Mennonite Chaplaincy Association under the direction of three Mennonite conferences: Mennonite Church Manitoba, Evangelical Mennonite Church and Evangelical Mennonite Mission Church.

On Easter Sunday, March 31, Dalhousie Community Church in Calgary baptized and welcomed into its fellowship Craig Jantzen and Brendan Harris.

Greg Wiebe was baptized and welcomed into fellowship at Westwood Community Church in Winnipeg on Mar. 17.
